Black watch for men - Swiss army watch band adjustment Black Watch For Men
great grandfather anderson taken some time in the 1870s, with his second wife, after service in india with the black watch, im experimenting with restoration on photoshop but open to sugestions . this was taken in gorelston, and the regiment spent about a year and a half in devonport , farely close to there, starting in 1871. the regiment then went to africa, (this must be before that as he is not wearing the ashantee war medal), malta, and cyprus, but if he was a corporal in the early 70s he probably served through lucknow (his first wife died of cholera, and the regt. suffered a sixth of its size and 5 women as casualties in cheroat and kultochto to this, as an nco he would have been alowed to have a spouse with him). before 1870 the regiment was only in the uk for 15 months over a 65 year span and even then only in the 1810s and 1830s, and usually in scotland. common men didnt exactly take vacations back then and certainly not to the south of england from scotland. he is not wearing trews which was a common walking out uniform and the men often wore pants with gold trim but that was before the 1830s, no red hackle on bonnet that became standard after 1825? its impossible this photo was taken before the 1840s. the crossed rifle badge on his lower right arm might be s.i.m. (musketry badge) this would date it after its creation in 1856. perhaps the womans dress holds clues but im no expert on victorian period dress, and it may have been an outfit provided by the studio. if any highlanders can tell me more of the uniform please do. this photograph is a daguerreotype style i think and printed on very, very thick stiff paper, almost cardboard. he was able to retire from the 42nd and farmed in the loathian area, and became quite active in masonic circles. any information is welcome. They man the VCP's alongside the Iraqi Police Service for 12 hours of the day. This particular VCP was on the main road from Az Zubyr to Basrah at 0900 hrs, rush hour. The battalion also have trained snipers to keep watch over the various locations they inhabit. They also have a long history of playing the pipes and drums and often play at there HQ at Basrah Palace. They rigorously maintain that they are soldiers first and bandsmen second.
